After a few months in the British Forces Broadcasting
Service in Aden, South Arabia, Peter Baxter joined BBC
Radio Outside Broadcasts in September 1965.
He worked on the radio production side of the 1966 Football
World Cup and shortly after that first worked on Test
Match Special as production assistant for the last Test
Match of 1966 at the Oval.
First broadcasts – reading the English football
results – in Dutch – for Radio Hilversum:
1969-1972
Appointed Cricket Producer for the start of the 1973
season.
Also Rugby Union producer 1974 – 1982 and Producer
of the University Boat Race 1980-1990.
Worked as producer on three royal weddings and two royal
funerals, as well as many other state events.
First England cricket tour as producer/reporter 1981/2
to India and Sri Lanka – Subsequently broadcast
on and produced radio coverage of Test Matches from
all ten Test-playing countries over the next 25 years.
Produced BBC Radio’s coverage of nearly 400 Test
Matches (commentating on about twenty of them) and all
nine Cricket World Cups.
